Band started as Black Gems Rare in 1969 by Charles Givings with his friends Charles Jones and Johnny Ross. In around 1970 new members were added to ground and the band name was changed to Rare Gems Odyssey.
Later they dropped 'Odyssey' from their name due to the mix-up with the UK band behind "Native New Yorker" and other hits.
