"19" is the debut album by British singer-songwriter Adele. It was released on 28th January 2008, the week after the lead single, "Chasing Pavements", was physically released. It debuted at number one on the UK charts on it's first week.
"19" was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize. At the 51st Grammy Awards, Adele won the Grammy for Best female pop vocal performance. The final track on the album, "Hometown Glory" was written by Adele in 10 minutes after her mother tried to persuade her to leave her home town of West Norwood in London, for university. In 2010, the song received a Grammy award nomination for Best female pop vocal performance.
"19" received generally positive reviews from critics, with billboard stating; "Adele truly has potential to become among the most respected and inspiring international artists of her generation". The Observer gave the album a great review saying, "The way she stretched the vowels, her wonderful soulful phrasing, the sheer unadulterated pleasure of her voice, stood out all the more: little doubt that she's a rare singer". The album is certified seven times platinum in the UK, and double platinum in the United States. Worldwide sales for the album are at an estimated 7 million copies.
