Esther Phillips (1935-1984) best known for her R&B vocals, was a very versatile singer, performing successful hits in country, jazz, blues and pop music.
Esther Phillips W/Beck features vocals from Phillips with Joe Beck's accompanyment on lead guitar. Beck was also responsible for the arrangement of all songs from the album, with overall production from Creed Taylor. The album features the song "What a Difference a Day Made" which was originally written in Spanish by María Grever, a mexican songwriter, in 1934. Originally, the song was known as "Cuando vuelva a tu lado" ("When i Return to Your Side"). The song is also known in English as "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes", as popularized by Dinah Washington in 1959 when she was awarded a Grammy award for Best rhythm and blues performance.
