Synth' Pop Albums

Synth' Pop Albums

Synth' pop music first became prominent in the 1980's, utilising the synthesizer as the dominent musical instrument. It was prefigured in the late 1960's and early 1970's by the use of synthesizers in progressive rock bands such as Kraftwerk as well as established "super groups" The Who. It arose as a distinctive genre in both Japan and the U.K. as part of the new wave movement of the late 1970's to the mid 1980's.

Early synth' pop pioneers included the Japanese group Yellow Magic Orchestra and British bands Ultravox and The Human League, largely using monophonic synthesizers to produce music with an austere sound.

After the breakthrough of Tubeway Army and Gary Numan in the British singles chart, larger numbers of artists began to enjoy success with a synthesizer based sound.

By the latter part of the decade 1980's duo's such as Erasure, The Communards and The Pet Shop Boys adopted a sound that was highly successful in the U.S. dance charts.
